Life's intrinsic worth vs. utilitarian worthIf you were born without an arm, would you be an "almost human?" How about a brain? One of the central beauties of the Christian witness in history is its primacy on mercy. Since the time of Rome when Christians would rescue abandoned babies to the present day where Christians adopt abused, neglected and disabled children from far-away lands, this is one of the most potent weapons of the church -- the refusal to value life on the altar of utility. In Business For Life salutes Brandon and Brittany Buell, parents of Jaxton who was born in 2014 with a rare brain malformation known as microhydranencephaly. Much of Jaxon's brain failed to form, leaving him significantly impaired, but the Buell's have chosen to value their son not on the scales of how useful he is in the world's eyes, but according to his intrinsic value as an image of God. If the picture of little Jaxon prompts you to recoil in grief, welcome to the crowd; anybody with a pulse and an ounce of mercy in his heart will grieve over a condition like Jaxon's. But IBFL sends kudos to the Buell family and to David Wright at ABC News (@WrightUps)for filming and airing this important report on how Brand and Brittany are doing what parents do -- daily falling deeper in love with their son.

Kudos to the people at Dove soap for putting together this wonderful new piece on fatherhood. God made fathers, mothers and babies; let's celebrate them, not demean them.
